During the Arts and Crafts period many small scale artisans working in silver enamels and semi precious stones used to make brooches and badges with these colours for groups of women to wear in order to show solidarity especially when the leadership were imprisoned and force fed by the reactionary state. The brooch that is offered here is a rarer item; it is in the shape of a flower to parody the words of politicians that had declared women to be precious flowers that must be protected from the nastiness of politics. These brooches were often made in Berlin, Vienna or Paris by special order by wealthy and well travelled women to show their allegiance with chic and a certain elan. The brooch is handmade and dates to circa late 1910's and consists of six gold stems topped by five lifelike hand carved amethyst flowers each of which is centered with 1 collet-set round diamond (0.5ct TCW) , the flowers are supported by three naturalistically carved nephrite leaves with polished yellow gold central veins attached to the long polished gold stems.
The brooch is closed by a fully functional trombone clasp setting. A unique and beautiful piece of jewellery that has deep vivid colours and immaculate intricate workmanship rarely seen today. The brooch measures: 5 cm x 4.5 cm The brooch weighs 15,3 grams.
