Ostby Barton man's ring. Features a unique bezel set all intaglio or carved looking cameo profile of a classic Roman centurion soldier warrior - facing left. Unusual mystery "stone" has a matte finish and gun metal hematite coloring - I honestly can't say what it is composed of for certain.
It could be sterling, white gold, other white metal, hematite, stone, or opaque glass. It is non-magnetic and is not plastic at all. Art deco period geometric designs, including 10k yellow gold accents around the bezel and down the sides.It has a bright peacock blue velvet bottom and ivory satin top on the inside and reads Edwards Jewelers Omaha, Nebraska. OB jewelry is treasured and collected for it's beautiful design elements, fine craftsmanship, and historical significance.
Their jewelry is hard to find, especially in good condition, and is escalating in both popularity and value. Engelhart Ostby studied at the Royal School of art and became a successful jeweler / goldsmith in his hometown of Oslo, Norway. After emigrating to America in 1869, he settled in Providence, Rhode Island and worked for several jewelry firms there.In 1879 the formed a partnership with Nathan B. Barton and created their business of Ostby & Barton. Engelhart was the founder and president of O & B Company, director of a bank and a trustee at another in Providence, named in a 1894 trade publication (The Jewelers Circular and Horological Review) as one of the directors of The Jewelers Board of Trade, and was also known for his charitable acts. He, unfortunately, perished on the RMS Titanic in April of 1912.
The majority of their jewelry was crafted. Between 1910 and 1920 - I believe this example falls in that range. Ready and waiting for your finger or collection - you will love it! Measurements : Face is aprox 11/16" tall x 5/8" wide, band tapers to 5 mm in the back.Marks : OB STERLING + 10k stamped on the inside of the band. US ring size : 11.5 on my stick. Weight : 9.3 grams on my scale. Condition : Good condition for the age - the band is ever so slightly out of round, evidence of well done prior sizing, when scrutinizing from the side the cameo has a minor gradual slope or is just thinner on one side than the other. Box shows it's age. All in all a very minor issues and. View & enlarge photographs to closely inspect fine details and to determine the amount of patina, and/or wear. Most older pieces by nature normally have some degree of both and, unless severe, aren't considered damaged.
