He learned the art of carving out designs in pottery from Tavo Silveira, and he does a magnificent job in the carving and the painting of his pottery. Roberto Olivas has been making pottery for about 14 years now, and won first place in the Mata Ortiz Concurso (juried award show) in 2007. More recently in 2015 Roberto took home the second prize in his category. The pot itself is extremely well done... With a great textural feel to it! And so light weight (another sign of high quality). The design features a stylish homage to the scarlet macaw, a ceremonial and religious figure to the people that inhabited the local ruins of Paquime. In ancient days the macaw bird feathers were traded up from Central America and used for religious and ceremonial purposes, so they became a key figure in the life of the local area. Paquime was a huge trading center until around the 14th century. The pot is painted with red and black natural paints. This piece is signed by the artist. A pottery display ring will be included at no additional cost.
